 Kerala Finance Minister wants hike in borrowing limitKerala Finance Minister T M Thomas Issac on Tuesday asked the Centre to increase the state's market borrowing limit by Rs 1,000 crore.At present the state has a borrowing limit of Rs 7,000 crore and if the Centre raises the limit, the state could mobilise more funds for its development activities, Issac told reporters here.All states have asked for an increase in the borrowing limit, he said, adding the ad-hoc committee of Finance Ministers of various states would take up this issue with the Centre.Pointing out that there was an increase in tax collection, he said e-filing of tax returns...Read More... | Top Stories

The first recorded history of Kerala appears in the inscriptions of the Mauryan Emperor, Ashoka (269-232 b.c.).In these inscriptions, Ashoka refers to four independent kingdoms that lay to the south of his empire. These were the kingdoms of the Cholas, the Pandyas, the Keralaputrasand the Satiyaputras.Among them, the Keralaputras or the Cheras, as they were called, reigned over Malabar, Cochin and North Travancore – all part of present-day Kerala. They managed to maintain their independence because they were on good terms with the Great Maurya. Otherwise, Ashoka, who was a great empire builder, would surely have attempted to bring these kingdoms under his tutelage.
The antiquity and robustness of Kerala's education system is underscored by her status as one of the most literate states in the country. The local dynastic precursors of modern-day Kerala made significant contributions to the progress on education by sponsoring sabha mathams that imparted Vedic knowledge. Apart from kalaris, which taught martial arts, there were village schools run by Ezhuthachans or Asans. The history of western education in Kerala can be traced to Christian missionaries who set up numerous schools and colleges.
